I was inspired by a collector friend (shout-out to Jay Furman) to explore this shape again after playing with it last year, and using my fondness for the Pipe Dan proportions. I've also wanted to step up the "Art Deco" feel of some of these pipes and incorporate it into a pipe stand.
These two pipes were made from a single block of Briar, and blasted so cleanly and deeply I was forced to keep them together. It took some time to find the right idea for the stand, but I finally had the machinery and stroke of inspiration to make it happen.
The base is yaki ita oak (also known as shō sugi ban). It is flame charred before finishing. The risers are brushed brass, which has been sandblasted and lacquered. All parts can be removed, as they were machined by hand to unscrew from one another. The stem rests are made from the same beautiful resin as the adornments on the pipes.
I'm so pleased with the result, it encapsulates everything I was looking for: the art deco vibes, the secure but showy stand, all complementing these fraternal twin pipes.
Pipe One:
Length: 5.01 inches
Weight: 31 g (1.05 oz)
Chamber: 0.64 x 1.33
Pipe Two:
Length: 4.85 inches
Weight: 29 g (1.00 oz)
Chamber: 0.64 x 1.79 inches
